If you love nature and are willing to overlook a fair amount of shabbiness, this is an excellent lodging choice. The main wooden building was built as a plantation home in the 1840s, and it has undergone multiple additions and renovations. Unless you plan to bring a large group along, you’ll be primarily interested in the five large rooms located on the second floor of the main house, which are outfitted with fourposter double beds. Other rooms and cottages offer dormitory-style sleeping for up to 60 persons. An environmental group called SCEPTRE – Springfield Centre for Environmental Protection – is head- quartered here, and visiting groups often stay on the grounds when they come to the island for field work. However, you don’t need to be part of an organization to feel welcome and at home here. Nature lovers are invited to enjoy the trails, streams, wildlife and tropical vegetation on the 200 acres surrounding the guest house. There’s no air-conditioning, but all rooms have fans and private bathrooms.
